CHENNAI: State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, along with forest department secretary Supriya Sahu, met Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change at New Delhi and submitted a Memorandum seeking clearances and funding for several Tamil Nadu Projects.
During the meeting, Thangam Thennarasu thanked this counterpart for accepting the request of Chief Minister MK Stalin to exempt environmental clearance for industrial sheds with area up to 1,50,000 Sqm and requested to expedite the clearance to the proposal of the state government for reconstitution of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) as their current tenure is getting over in April 2025.
"Meanwhile Tamil Nadu has already submitted a proposal to the Ministry to set up an additional SEAC in view to provide speedy clearances to the growing number of infrastructure and development projects in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Union Minister assured to provide speedy clearance to the proposal of the Government of Tamil Nadu, " a government release said.
Also, the Ministry was requested to sanction a project for creating a green shield for enhancing coastal and forest ecosystems in Thoothukudi district, whose proposal has already been submitted to the Ministry under the National Action Plan on Climate Change and Green India Mission for Rs 27.53 crore.
"The government of Tamil Nadu has also submitted a comprehensive project to the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), functioning under the Ministry at a cost of Rs.74.4 crore for relocating Thengumarahada village from the buffer area of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve located in the Nilgiris District.
A request was made to sanction the project expeditiously given the importance of Tiger conservation in that area and the frequent human-wildlife conflict endangering the safety of the local community. The Union Minister assured his Ministry's support to the State Government's initiatives highlighted in the memorandum, " the release added.
