Amid claims by Opposition parties that Tamil was removed from the preliminary TNPSC exam for Group II, K Nanthakumar, Secretary, TNPSC said, “In the earlier method, candidates who did not have knowledge of Tamil could easily clear the exam by choosing English in place of Tamil but now Tamil has been made compulsory in the main examination of Group-II and so candidates who have thorough knowledge on Tamil can alone get through it.”

Recently, TNPSC introduced host of changes in Group-II examination in which the main examination was introduced and language papers, both Tamil and English, were removed from the preliminary exams. The preliminary examination of Group-II was made similar to preliminary examination of Group-I and Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

While the changes received mixed response from candidates, Opposition party leaders condemned TNPSC for removing Tamil from the preliminary examination. TNPSC, however, later clarified that Tamil was not removed from Group-II but was shifted from preliminary to the main examination.

“In mid 1990s when the main examination was removed from the exam pattern, language portion was added to preliminary examination but now as main examination has been reintroduced, the language portion has once again shifted to the main examination,” said R Sudhan, Controller of Examination, TNPSC, who also dismissed the claims of Opposition leaders that TNPSC is not against Tamil language.

The language portion in main examination will test the Tamil skills of the candidates and “candidates who possess Tamil comprehension skills required for government jobs can alone clear the examination,” said Sudhan.

Nanthakumar added that now candidates of other states should also have knowledge of Tamil for clearing the TNPSC exams. He also said that the exam pattern will not be reverted.
