In a tweet, he said AIADMK leader S R Balasubramoniyan’s explanation that the party members voted in favour of the Bill in Rajya Sabha on the directions of the deputy secretary in AIADMK headquarters should make members of Parliament “hang their head in shame”. The statement was “worrying and ridiculous,” the senior leader of the Congress said.

Criticising the state government for ignoring Sri Lankan Tamils on the issue, Chidambaram sought a reply for it. “They should have been seen only as Sri Lankan Tamils and has the government forgotten that a majority of them are Hindus,” the former finance minister wondered.

In his speech in the Rajya Sabha during the debate on the Citizenship Amendment Bill, Chidambaram had accused the union government of promoting Hindutva through the new law, which he said was divisive and would be struck down by court.
