According to sources, the public who spotted more than 100 ballot papers, which were sealed and signed by polling officials, lying discarded on the Perambalur-Ariyalur highway, passed on the information to polling officials and the police.

Upon information, Kunnam tahsildhar Chitra and police officials rushed to the spot and retrieved as many as 113 ballot papers. The ballot papers were taken to the tahsildhar’s office in Kunnam and an inquiry was initiated.

Meanwhile, on information, the public and the cadre belonging to various political parties-including the DMK and the Congress-who rushed to the spot engaged in a quarrel with the officials. Subsequently, police officials intervened and pacified the irate public and the cadre.

Officials said that an inquiry into whether the ballot papers were disposed of before the counting or after the counting of votes, was initiated. Only after a thorough investigation would the truth be known, the officials added.
