    Court bars AIADMK councillor

    A Thanjavur court on Thursday ordered an AIADMK district councillor not to participate in the indirect poll for the chairman post as his victory was being contested.

    Thanjavur District Council has as many as 28 councillors and in the just concluded elections, DMK secured as many as 22 seats while the AIADMK won in six seats. Among the council members, Ponnusamy was contesting as DMK candidate for the ward No 15 while AIADMK fielded Vinubalan, a close relative of AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam. Out of 62,313 voters, only 39,158 turned to vote among which as many as 2,680 votes were declared as invalid.


    In such a backdrop, the DMK candidate Ponnusamy secured 12,554 votes and AIADMK candidate Vinubalan got 12,753 votes and the officials declared Vinubalan the victor.  Meanwhile, the DMK approached the court against the result and on Thursday Magistrate Sivagnanam postponed the hearing to January 20.
