‘India can overtake China if higher edu quality is improved’

“Though China and India became a socialist republic and a democratic republic within months and though India’s per capita income was more than that of China’s in 1950, today China has overtaken our country by having a per capita income of USD 10, 000 whereas that of India was only USD 2,200,” said VIT chancellor G Viswanathan recently.

Presiding over the silver jubilee of the VIT alumni association, the chancellor said that India stood a good chance of overtaking China if the spending on higher education was increased to 6 % of the GDP but it had not crossed 4% of the GDP despite many commissions recommending it over the years.

Increasing the amount in spending for higher education would enable many poor students to get scholarships which in turn would benefit the country, he added.

Former chief justice of India P Sathasivam, who was the chief guest, said,”It was the intimate quality of the student – teacher relationship and the type of education we impart to students which would ultimately ensure academic and financial results for the nation.”

The chief guest later handed over the awards to the distinguished alumni. Those present included vice presidents Sankar Viswanathan, Sekar Viswanathan, ED Sandhy Pentareddy and pro VC S Narayanan.
