Tension prevailed across the city as the accused being a Muslim, while the BJP members staged a series of protests, including road block, demanding immediate arrest of the culprit.

Vijaya Raghu (39), a resident of Varaganeri and Palakkarai mandal BJP secretary, was working as a collection agent for two-wheeler parking at Gandhi Market area. While Vijaya Raghu was collecting parking fee at Gandhi Market area around 5.30 am on Monday, Babu alias Mittai Babu alias Mohammed Babu (20) of Uppupaarai came there along with his friends and had reportedly picked up a quarrel with Vijaya Raghu.

The heated argument, however, snowballed into an assault and Babu, who carried an aruval, assaulted Vijaya Raghu on his head and legs and fled the spot. On seeing Vijaya Raghu battling for life, the onlookers rushed him to the GH where he succumbed to his injuries. His body was later taken to the mortuary for post-mortem. On information, the Gandhi Market police registered a case and started investigation. Meanwhile, as news about the murder spread, the BJP members gathered in front of the GH and staged a protest demanding to arrest the culprit. They claimed that Mohammed Babu is a ‘terrorist’ and murdered Vijaya Raghu for being active with the protests in support of the CAA.

The BJP cadre also resorted to a road block demanding immediate arrest of Babu and traffic was disrupted at the GH road for about an hour. The protesters dispersed only after the police assured them that the culprit would be arrested soon.

The preliminary investigation showed that Babu used to stalk Vijaya Raghu’s daughter, who dropped her studies after SSLC. Whenever the girl goes out of her house, Babu had reportedly followed her and insisted her to love him. The girl who refused to accept it alerted her father about this and he had reportedly warned Babu on several occasions.

Still, Babu continued to disturb the girl and so a few months back, Vijaya Raghu met Babu along with his relative Krishna Kumar and warned him again. But there erupted an argument between Vijaya Raghu and Babu. Soon, Babu reportedly stabbed Vijaya Raghu and his relative Krishna Kumar. Based on the complaint by Vijaya Raghu, the Gandhi Market police had registered a case and arrested Babu, who was later lodged in the prison and was out on bail. IG (Central Zone) and City Commissioner of Police (In-charge) A Amalraj denied any communal motive behind the killing.
