Good response to anti-hydrocarbon stir in Delta districts
Farmers, pro Tamil outfits, public and activists took part in large number in the anti-hydrocarbon project protests organised by the DMK on Tuesday
Thiruchirapalli
Cauvery Delta farmers and public have been conducting a series of protests against hydrocarbon extraction in the region which would turn the fertile Delta into a desert. The farmers claimed that the projects would also lead to a drop in the ground water levels and the agricultural activity which is the main source of livelihood for the people in the region.
Meanwhile, the DMK had organised a mega protest at five districts of Cauvery Delta and invited all the political parties to take part in the protest. As per the announcement by the DMK on the protest, the cadre gathered in front of the district collectorate in Tiruvarur led by the party district secretary and MLA Poondi Kalaivanan and raised slogans against the Centre and state governments. They charged that the AIADMK government has been supporting the BJP-led Centre in all the anti-people projects. They demanded the state government to insist upon the Centre to drop the projects.
Similar protests were held in Thanjavur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai in which large number of peopleparticipated.
‘Involve allies in CAA signature drive’
The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance would start its signature campaign against CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) as decided in the meeting of opposition parties earlier.
DMK president on Tuesday has advised his party workers to involve alliance party workers while going door to door to educate people about the Act which would divide people and jeopardise the integrity of the nation. An announcement made in this regard by the party headquarters said the DMK chief would launch the campaign in his Kolathur constituency on February 2.
Leaders of the alliance parties, state Congress president KS Alagiri, MDMK chief Vaiko, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan and Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani would launch the same at other places. Instructing his party district units to organise the signature campaign, Stalin also exhorted his party workers to involve allies in discussions on detailing the signature campaign forms to the people.
The campaign starting on February 2 would continue till February 8. In his message to the cadre, the DMK chief took a veiled dig at the ruling BJP and said the cadre should keep in mind that this is not a “missed call movement” to duplicate things. This is a real movement in which the people would express their feelings sincerely and signature from every household should be secured for the campaign.
