Ganja seizure off campus: Univ awaits police report

Talking about the incident, VIT Chancellor said, “I am yet to get the full details from the police. Only after receiving it will we decide on the course of action – suspension of dismissal – to be taken.” We have to see whether those arrested were VIT students or outsiders, and if they are of the current batch or those who passed out, he added.

Police sources said that it would take a minimum of two days for all paperwork to be completed before the report could be handed over toVIT authorities.

The arrest of eight people on Monday sent shock waves in the university campus which is gearing up for its annual cultural and sports carnival, Riviera.

While the eight were arrested under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, four others, including two who had rented out the private premises at nearby Selvam Nagar where the ganja was seized from, escaped.

The incident occurred outside the university campus.

Those in the know said that at least five are likely to face penal action as the police not wanting to attract any unnecessary or adverse reaction sent them for medical tests 36 hours later under the orders of Vellore SP Pravesh Kumar.

Further, sources said that the police who initially were willing to warn the youth and let them go had no other option but to act when nearly 14 kilos of ganja was seized from the premises. “The caught students were totally bewildered when the police raided their premises as this was the first time they were coming in contact with the law, albeit for the wrong reasons. It was pitiable to see them begging for mercy,” a formerofficial said.
