Resolution in Pondy Assembly to ensure SC and ST quota

Moving the resolution, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said that the Indian Constitution ensured reservation for SC/ST people in government jobs and education.

He said these people were benefitted and social justice ensured as the Ministry headed by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru accepted the recommendation of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and implemented the reservation policy. 

In the past, when the Union government amended the Constitution to ensure reservation in promotions also apart from employment and education, some forces against social justice moved the Supreme Court and obtained a stay on the Constitutional amendment, he said, adding that when the Congress government in the past took initiatives in this direction it was also stalled. 

The Chief Minister said that the ruling of the Supreme Court on an appeal from Uttarakhand government  that reservation could not be provided in promotions and there is no right to claim reservation under the reservation policy has sent shock waves among the SC/ST people.

Such an Order could not be there without  the BJP influence, he alleged and added that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre should file a review petition on the issue. If necessary the government in Puducherry is prepared to move such a review petition, he added. Several members participated in the discussion. Meanwhile, the Assembly condoled the demise of former legislators Purushotaman from the AIADMK and Ramanathan from the DMK.
