In the southern region, scores of Muslims from parts of Madurai and other districts continued their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Several men took out a rally led by Shahul Hameed, district president of Jamatul Ulama Sabai that commenced near the World Tamil Sangam in a bid to lay siege Madurai Collectorate. The protesters raised slogans while marching up to the Collectorate demanding the Centre to rescind the CAA immediately and also appealed the State government to adopt resolution against the CAA in the Assembly. When the agitating protesters were marching near the Gandhi Museum, police force deployed at the locality prevented them from going ahead and pacified the agitators. At Jinnah Thidal in Mahaboopalayam, Madurai, Muslims in large numbers including women and children led by the Jamaath continued their sit-in 24/7 protest.

In Vellore, more than 600 Muslims converged before the Vellore Collectorate in Sathuvachari demanding the State Assembly to pass a resolution against the CAA. Following the protests, the police cordoned off the area. The officials then allowed a representative group to hand over their petition to Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram.

Similarly, thousands of Muslim community members converged at the Collectors’ offices of Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai, and raised slogans against the CAA in their respective districts. In all the locations, demonstrations were peaceful while the police were also stationed in sizeable numbers to prevent any untoward happening.
