On February 27, I Kanimozhi (25), resident from Thiyagathurukkam in Kallakurichi district, a guest lecturer at Thanjavur Tamil University, was trying to cross the Thanajvur-Tiruchy bypass in front of the university when she was knocked down by a car.
While she was struggling for life, the car fled the spot and the onlookers took her to Thanjavur Meenakshi Hospital for treatment. Vallam police rushed to the spot and registered a case and were searching for the driver.
Meanwhile, as Kanimozhi was seriously injured, the medical treatment had failed to respond and the conditions was deteriorating day by day and so she was put on ventilator support.
However, on Monday, Kanimozhi was declared brain-dead by a team of doctors. And the parents of Kanimozhi decided to donate her major organs and expressed their willingness to the doctors.
Based on their willingness, the doctors retrieved the major organs and donated one of the kidneys to a patient at Thanjavur Meenakshi Hospital while the other was donated to a patient in Tiruchy.
While the liver was donated to a patient in Madurai hospital, heart and lungs were transported to a private hospital in Chennai while both the eyes were donated to patients at Thanajvur Medical College hospital. Later, the mortal remains were handed over to Kanimozhi’s father Ilango.
