    Bail for 6 Thailand nationals found hiding in mosque

    The Madras High Court has granted bail to six Thailand nationals who were arrested by the Erode police for allegedly spreading coronavirus in the district.

    Considering the nature of allegations against the petitioners in the FIR and that they have been in judicial custody from April 9, Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan granted interim conditional bail for eight weeks.

    The judge also recorded that they were subjected to screening for the virus when they landed in New Delhi airport on tourist visas on March 6. They were permitted to leave the airport after they were found negative. Thereafter, they went to Erode and stayed at Sulthanpet mosque. But there, they were found positive and admitted to the hospital. Now they have recovered, and after mandatory quarantine period, they were sent to Puzhal Central Prison, Chennai.

    Directing them to execute own bond for Rs 10,000, the judge also directed them to surrender passports to the prison authorities and not to leave Chennai until further orders. He also directed them to inform about their place of residence in the city to the Corporation Commissioner to enable their quarantine in that address.

    Similarly, Justice Ilanthiraiyan also granted interim bail to a person who had accompanied 11 Indonesians affected by COVID and had spread the virus to the residents within Kitchipalayam police station limits in Salem city.

    The petitioner, Ahmath Ikbal of Chennai, was also infected, and after treatment at Mohan Kumaramangalam General Hospital, he was remanded in judicial custody based on a complaint lodged by the VAO.

    The judge also granted interim bail to the Cuddalore District president of Majlis Party, who was arrested for allegedly spreading false news against both the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre. He had alleged that adequate steps were not taken to check persons who had arrived at Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore.
