Delta farmers get busy in preparing Kuruvai nurseries

After a gap of almost nine years, Delta farmers have commenced preparing nurseries of kuruvai in full swing and target to cultivate it in an area of 3.25 lakh acres. This is made possible by the comfortable storage in Mettur Dam.

According to officials, at least 70 TMC of water is required for kuruvai in Delta region. At present it is planned to cultivate in an area of one lakh acres in Thanjavur, while in Tiruvarur 80,000 acres and in Nagapattinam at least 92,500 acres. When water release from Mettur takes place as per the customary date, the acreage would go up.

Anticipating opening of Mettur dam on time, the farmers have commenced raising the nurseries. “We have suggested the farmers to plant the nurseries with the help of bore wells from the month of May which would save at least 14 TMC and the kuruvai would be successful this year with a minimum of 48.60 TMC,” said, senior agricultural technocrat P Kalaivanan. He further said that the IMD has predicted good South West monsoon rains.
