At present, Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) is taking care of government and government-aided engineering and polytechnic colleges. Likewise, Directorate of Collegiate Education monitors State-owned arts and science colleges across the State.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that about 70 per cent of the workforce in government colleges were dependent on public transport.

With the Tamil Nadu government bringing in relaxations by allowing minimum staff, all the faculties and non-teaching staff in government and governmentaided colleges were urged to come for duty to do new academic year related works, including admission process, he said.

Stating that there was no plan to provide transportation facilities for the staff earlier, the official said that they received several requests from the faculty across the State to provide transport facilities.

“A request has been made with the Transport Department. We have also provided details of the staff who will need transportation facilities. Employees will be picked up from one common point and would drop them at the same junction,” he said.

He added that only 20 staff members will be allowed in one vehicle and the move will benefit around 10,000 teaching and non-teaching staff.

“Since the government has decided to work with minimum staff, vehicles will be available for all the employees. The Transport Department has agreed to provide the required number of buses.”

According to the official, shift-based rotation system will be adopted so that all the faculty members and nonteaching employees would have a chance to work and complete all works before reopening the institutions for the new academic year.
