In his complaint, the party’s principal secretary KN Nehru asked the DGP to issue appropriate circulars to sensitise police personnel about the law relating to registration of multiple FIRs for a single incident/occurrence and avoid repetition by upgrading the software used by the state police. Detailing the FIRs registered in different police stations against party MPs, including one against Bharathi who was arrested under SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act a few days ago, Nehru urged the state police chief to “direct the station house officers to close the subsequent FIRs against the three MP’s forthwith without prejudice to their rights and contentions raised before the Madras High Court since the subsequent FIRs are non-exist in law and ab initio void.”

Remarking that it was the duty of the police force to act in accordance with law, the DMK principal secretary said the ruling AIADMK was behind the complaints and the police machinery was being misused and abused to settle political scores.

He added that the “highly frivolous and vexatious” complaints were filed only to harass and cripple the highly successful “Ondrinaivom Va” programme undertaken by the DMK to help the public during the pandemic.
