A public interest litigation petition filed by Malaikannu of Ramanathapuram district came up for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices PN Prakash and B Pugalendi. The petitioner stated that the COVID-19 has brought untold sufferings to labourers, especially to migrants in Tamil Nadu. The State government during the COVID-19 crisis provided essential commodities, including 15 kilos of rice, 1 kg of dhal and 1 litre of cooking oil to the workforce as part of special measures.

Besides, steps were also taken to provide cash assistance of Rs 1,000 to each of the workers. Unfortunately, many of the migrant labourers have not registered their names with the Department of Labour.

After hearing both sides, the bench directed the Additional Chief Secretary, Labour to file a counter in this regard. The case was adjourned to further hearing on June 10.
