It is said, being the hotspot in Tiruchy, Gandhi Market was closed indefinitely and the retailers were allowed to sell at several locations and the G-Corner was allotted for the wholesale vegetable vendors. However, the other traders whose shops were located in the Gandhi market premises itself were not allowed to do business as the entrance was sealed in the presence of the district collector S Sivarasu.

Despite repeated requests, the district collector did not allow them to resume business as the premises was a hotspot and the people as well as social activists continued to oppose the opening of Gandhi Market. Meanwhile, the traders staged a protest and approached the minister Vellamandi N Natarajan who even favoured the traders which received the wrath of the public and later, the idea was dropped. In such a backdrop, the district collector convened a meeting with the traders and promised them to open the shops on June 1. However, the situation turned to be bad to worse and the district collector refused to allow them.
