    72 per cent of desilting works in Delta completed, claims Satyagopal

    Around 72 per cent of desilting works have been completed in the Cauvery Delta and the remaining works are underway on war footing, said Water Resources Conservation and River Restoration Corporation Chairman and Managing Director Dr K Satyagopal in Thanjavur on Thursday.

    He told reporters that the Chief Minister has instructed to desilt to a distance of 3,455 km across the Delta and allotted Rs 67 crore. A fund of Rs 64 crore has been allotted for the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai for as many as 360 works. “So far the desilting works have been completed to a distance of 2,450 km in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Tiruchy, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts. Accordingly, 72 per cent of works have so far been completed,” said Satyagopal.

    Meanwhile, a fund of Rs 499 crore has been allotted for as many as 1,200 works under kudimaramathu scheme. “A fund of Rs 35 crore has been allotted for Thanjavur district under the scheme for as many as 109 works and the entire works would be completed within three days,” assured Satyagopal.

    Peruvalai retention wall damaged, repairs on
    The retention walls of the Peruvalai irrigation canal that gets branched from Mukkombu barrage had been damaged on Thursday and the farmers from the locality blamed the PWD officials for their carelessness while desilting the waterbody.

    On information, PWD officials rushed to the spot and blocked vehicle movement above the canal and strengthened the walls. According to PWD Tiruchy Division Chief Engineer Ramamurthy, there will not be a problem in release of water through the canal and the agricultural activities would not be affected. The retention walls have been strengthened and the entire works would be completed within 15 days.
