After inspecting the ongoing desilt works in Thirumalairajan river at Nannilam, Kamaraj told reporters that the desilting works have been fast-tracked to ensure that the discharge from Mettur dam reached the tail end regions without any hitch.
“Since the release from the Mettur happening on the customary date of June 12 after nine years, Delta farmers can be sure of bumper harvest and thus the food production, especially paddy, will also go up in the State,” said Kamaraj.
Pointing out that the Delta recorded 20 per cent more harvest last year, the Food Minister said that in the upcoming season the harvest would be more as crops would receive adequate water.
He also said that due to the efficient water management and timely support to farmers by the State government resulted in good yield this year and so the State government procured 24 lakh MT paddy through DPCs.
Meanwhile, Thanajvur district collector M Govinda Rao told reporters that water from the Grand Anicut (Kallanai) would be released on June 16 as the water has been released from Mettur on the scheduled date.
