Govt opposes cab operators’ plea seeking financial aid
The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday opposed the plea moved by cab owners at the Madras High Court seeking financial relief of Rs 15,000 each, saying that it was not just the taxi drivers who have been affected owing to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Recording it, a division bench comprising Justice R Subbiah and Justice Krishnan Ramasamy reserved orders on the plea which is expected to be delivered on Thursday.
Besides seeking relief, the Tamil Nadu Independent Rental Vehicle Owners and Drivers Association wanted the State to also provide discount on road tax, extension of time to renew fitness certificate, insuranceand exemption from payment of toll and permit charges during the lockdown period.
The association It contended that during normal situation, taxi owners and drivers support the government by periodical road taxes and permit charges. Therefore, in this extraordinary circumstance, it was the duty of the government to take care of such stakeholders.
Most of the drivers were in the age group of 25 to 50 having the responsibility to take care of their family. They were now under unimaginable stress and in urgent need of support from the government for their survival, the plea added, while also seeking the Centre to provide interest-free loan ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra scheme.
