The farmers from Kandiyur and adjacent villages have taken up cultivation in 2000 acre land and they have readied the paddy seeds but their main source of irrigation canals from Kudamuritti river like Thiruvalampozhil vaical, Sankarakulam canal, Thiruthukal canal and Kandiyur canal had not received water from the main source.
Still, the farmers have been carrying water from the nearby water bodies to save the saplings that they had already planted. In such a backdrop, the farmers approached PWD officials for release of water through these irrigation canals. However the farmers were told that these canals were exclusively used for samba cultivation and hence refused to release water.
On Saturday, the irate farmers spilled the seeds at the the office of the Superintendent Engineer. They also provided documents directing the water bodies to be utilized for kuruvai cultivation.
The farmers also continued to raise slogans in support of their demands. Subsequently, upon the assurance of the Superintendent Engineer to release water, the farmers withdrew their protest.
