Govt school students excel in new syllabus
Many might have thought that the overall pass percentage of Class 12 students of government schools would be reduced since they had to face the new syllabus this year. But, students from the State-run schools proved it wrong by securing an overall pass percentage of 85.94 per cent compared to the previous year’s 84.76 per cent.

Also, Class 12 students from more than 10 districts put up a good show by securing more than 90 per cent in overall pass percentage. Last year, only six districts crossed 90 per cent.
However, in Chennai, the students’ overall pass percentage dipped a little. Accordingly, this year, the pass percentage in the capital city was 87.05 per cent compared to last year’s 87.54.
On the improvement in performance by government schools, a senior official from the School Education Department told DT Next that to ensure the development of transactional skills of teachers, in-service training has been imparted, especially on the revised curriculum, syllabus and textbooks. “In 2019-20 a seven-day training was given to as many as 55,639 graduate teachers and 33,956 post-graduate teachers at a cost of Rs 18 crore,” he added.
Stating that guidance and counselling were important components of services to students to help them to face the new syllabus and exam challenge, the official said: “As many as 1,49,037 students from 984 schools across the State were provided with psychological counselling this year. Of this, 7,892 students received individual counselling.
Tamil Nadu Teachers Association president PK Ilamaran attributed the success to the Education Department authorities. “They worked hard by introducing micro-teaching. Apart from counselling, individual classes were conducted for poor performers in many government schools, especially in the rural areas,” he said.
