“The rains are a result of the interactions between the easterly trough and westerly trough over the State. All areas of the State can expect moderate rainfall as the week goes on,” said S Balachandran, Director, Regional Metrological Department, Chennai. He added that the city is expected to see mild to moderate thunderstorms this week.

As the July monsoons have progressed at a typical rate, rains are expected to be light to moderate in most parts of the State. Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, and Perambalur are expected to see isolated cases of heavy rain.

While there was no significant rainfall recorded at both stations today, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 26.4 degrees Celsius, while Meenambakkam recorded 35.2 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.

Stating that the monsoons have not been good for the north and central parts of Chennai, Pradeep John, who runs the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, said, “South Chennai had a historic July so far with Meenambakkam just 30 mm short of crossing 300 mm. If it crosses 300 mm in next five days, it will be the wettest July in 200 years for South Chennai,” he said.
