Inflow into Mettur doubles as Karnataka releases 50K cusecs

Water flow into the dam almost doubled up to 6,000 cusecs at 5.05 pm on Thursday from 3,625 cusecs at 8 am. Inflow into the dam is likely to surge further as Biligundlu, the entry point of Cauvery into Tamil Nadu from Karnataka registered an inflow of about 21,000 cusecs at 5 pm.

Inflow at Biligundlu may go up steadily as Karnataka has opened up over 50,000 cusecs from Kabini dam, which has reached a comfortable water position following heavy rains in its catchment areas. Already, a flood alert has been issued to people living along the banks of river Cauvery.

The water level in Mettur dam stood at 64.2 feet as against its full reservoir capacity of 120 feet. The discharge from the dam is maintained constant at 3,000 cusecs due to rains in Delta region.

Meanwhile, rains continued unabated in The Nilgiris causing widespread destruction for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday. Tree falls had become a cause of worry and traffic was hit as another 50 trees got uprooted taking the total tally of fallen trees to around 250, said District Fire Officer T Immanuel. The district has received an average of 111.15 millimeters of rain with Avalanche recording a maximum of 581 millimeters over a 24-hour-period till Thursday morning.
