Ministers take stock along Bhavani, flood alert in Amaravati too

The Amaravathi dam has reached 85 feet against its full reservoir capacity of 90 feet. With a heavy inflow of about 10,000 cusecs due to rains in Kerala, the administration has sounded a flood alert as the dam is likely to be opened up anytime. Also, the inflow into Mettur dam surged to 30,000 cusecs on Friday following heavy discharge from Karnataka.

From 6,000 cusecs on Thursday, the inflow into the reservoir rose steadily to take the storage level to 65.550 feet at 8 am on Friday.

Meanwhile, Municipal Administration Minister, SP Velumani and Animal Husbandry Minister Udumalai Radhakrishnan took stock of the safety arrangements being taken along the banks of the flooded Bhavani river in Coimbatore.

A flood alert has been issued to villages along the banks of river Bhavani over the last four days due to heavy discharge from the dam, which has crossed 97 feet as against its full level of 100 feet. About 30,000 cusecs of water is being released from the dam.

After review, Velumani said that the administration has kept community halls, marriage halls and schools ready to accommodate people, if they were displaced from flood prone areas. In a huge relief, rains eased a bit in The Nilgiris after about four days. Yet several low lying areas near the Kalampuzha stream continued to remain inundated.
