The deceased were identified as Balasubramani, 55 from Modakurichi, his mother Pavathal, 80, his sister Maragadham, 58 and her husband Mohanampuri, 60. They were returning home from a condolence meet, when they met with their deadly fate around 8 15 am.
The TNSTC bus heading towards Erode from Sivagiri and driven by Merick Prabhu, 47, run berserk while nearing Puduvalasu and crushed the two bikes coming in the opposite direction.
All the four riding on the two bikes came under the wheels of the bus and they were dragged on for a short distance before the bus stopped on ramming a compound wall. They all died on the spot, while the driver and a few passengers were hospitalised with minor injuries. Police deployed two cranes to remove the bus and recover the bodies. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the driver’s negligence has caused the mishap. “Initially it was suspected to be a break failure. However, it was then known that the accident was due to negligence of the driver,” said an official.
Modakurichi police have registered a case against the driver under IPC sections 304 (A) and 279.
