    Post-COVID care centre established at Salem government hospital

    An integrated post-COVID care centre has been established at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital (GMKMC) in Salem on Thursday to provide follow up health care to those discharged after treatment.

    The objective of the centre is to monitor the health of discharged patients, improve their immunity and help them overcome mental stress caused by the infection, said Salem District Collector SA Raman after inaugurating the facility.

    The centre will have a general medical practitioner, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, nutritionist, and yoga and naturopathy practitioner. As recovered patients commonly complain of prolonged fatigue, exercises would be taught to overcome tiredness.

    Also breathing exercises using special equipment will be done to improve lung capacity and prevent complications. They can also undergo stress counselling, practice yoga and pranayama exercises to improve their immune system.

    Patients will also be provided with aromatic therapy to prevent headache and cleanse lungs. Telemedicine facility is also available.

    The GMKMC is a tertiary care centre in Salem and the hospital has been handling COVID cases with severe symptoms mainly. Of the 27,168 persons who tested positive till Wednesday, 25,015 have recovered, while 411 persons died. A total of 4, 38,099 RT-PCR tests have been done so far in the district.

    Salem district Collector SA Raman, who upon inaugurating the post-COVID care centre, also inspected the 35,000-litre oxygen tank being installed in the hospital.
