Cash seized in Ranipet DPC negates Min’s claim
The seizure of Rs 49,300 from a direct purchase centre (DPC) at Mahendravadi in Ranipet district contradicts Food Minister R Kamaraj’s statement and that of the Civil Supplies Corporation official’s submission in Madurai High Court Bench that no farmer was fleeced in the DPCs.

The raid, which started on Tuesday went on till the wee hours of Wednesday and in addition to the cash, Vellore Vigilance officials also nabbed 9 brokers who tried to flee on coming to know of the officials’ identity. Farmers, who were happy at the raid felt vindicated as they had been told that if they complained then the local DPC would be removed affecting them hugely. They also said that mamool amounts differed at DPCs. While it was Rs 80 per bag at Mahendravadi, Kila Veedi and Mettuvettankulam DPCs, it was Rs 60 per bag at the Tirumalpur and Pallur DPCs and Rs 50 per bag at the DPC located at Reddyvalam, sources revealed.
Vigilance officials’ raid was a result of numerous complaints of DPC officials collecting up to Rs 80 per 40 kilo bag of paddy from farmers.
