On Tuesday, Tiruchy Collector S Sivarasu inaugurated the planting of saplings and around 200 saplings were planted on day one.

The facility to be created at Punampalayam village in Mannachanallur would have walkers’ path across the forest. Among the 59 varieties of tree planned, there are fruit trees, shade trees and even trees like rosewood and teak to be planted.

“All these saplings are three months old and we have roped in the MGNREGS workers to complete the works,” Lalgudi RDO S Vaithyanathan, the brain behind the project told DT Next.

“In this project, we have retrieved around 2 acres of land encroached by a few persons who were using it for agriculture. We worked on it for the past three months and completed the entire process of taking the land under government custody,” said Vaithyanathan.

For the past 20 days, the MGNREGS workers have been readying the land and we would plant three saplings in one sq metre and the completion of the planting process would take at least one week. Within a year, this forest would turn to a haven for birds and the people who would make use of the environment for rejuvenating, he said.
