31 new fish landing centres to be built across the state at a cost of Rs 359 cr
In a bid to address the long pending demands of fishermen, state Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan, on Saturday, announced construction of 31 fish landing centres across the state, at the total cost of Rs 359 crore.

Among the total 31 fish landing centres, 11 will be constructed in Thoothukudi district, 7 in Chengalpattu district, 6 in Cuddalore, 3 in Kanniyakumari, 2 in Myladuthurai and 1 each in Villupuram and Thanjavur district.Â
Among the fish landing centres, the major project will be in Manapad in Thoothukudi district at the cost of Rs 45 crore when the estuary of Karumeni river, which joins the sea in Manapad, will be desilted and a fish landing centre will be constructed.Â
Minister also said that the dredging work will be undertaken in Thoothukudi fishing harbour at the cost of Rs 5 crore.Â
Due to frequent chance of water current sand gets deposited in the harbour which makes movement of mechanised boats difficult and to remove the accumulated sand dredging works will be undertaken. Minister further announced that a shrimp farm will be setup in Agaram in Cuddalore district at the cost of Rs 1.4 crore to increase the production of native shrimp varieties.
