It may be noted that the I-T Department last week had attached a property of Sasikala, located in Payyanur, OMR, taken over from music director Gangai Amaran in 1994. Sasikala, close confident of former CM and the late AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa is back in Chennai after spending four years in jail in Bengaluru in connection with a disproportionate case, in which Jayalalithaa was also convicted. Sasikala is now heading a splinter faction of AIADMK.
Last October, the I-T Department attached the Siruthavur farm house in the name of J Ilavarasi and VN Sudhakaran, relatives of Sasikala and also the Kodanad Estate belonging to Sasikala. The property attached on Wednesday is situated in the same neighborhood.
In the past, the I-T Department has also attached seven properties, including a mall, jewellery firm and a resort etc. which were allegedly ‘purchased’ by Sasikala using scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes immediately after the Centre banned those notes. The ‘owners’ had appealed against the attachment and orders on the appeal is reserved by the High Court in June this year.
