CHENNAI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) released Swayam MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) in 8 languages, including Tamil, in a bid to provide flexibility in learning in the mother tongue to the learners.

UGC secretary Rajnish Jain, in a circular to all the universities and colleges, said that as of now, a total of 27 MOOCs have been translated into Indian Languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bangla, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil.

According to him, the translated courses will address language barriers and promote Indian languages while also providing flexibility of learning in the mother tongue to the learners.

He said anyone desirous of learning can access and benefit from these Open Educational Resources (OER) and universities and colleges will utilise these OER for flipped classroom learning and blended mode of learning.

The UGC secretary also requested all the universities, colleges, and other institutions to provide the link of SWAYAM Platform (www.swayam.gov.in) and "UGC e-resources Portal (http://ugceresources.in/)" on their home page and promote awareness of these portals through their social media handles so that more and more students can avail the benefits of accessing these resources for their knowledge enhancement.

Some of the important course that was translated include Artificial Intelligence, Biostatistics and Mathematical Biology, Communication Technologies in Education, City and Metropolitan planning, Corporate law, and Cyber Security.
