CHENNAI: The general council of the ruling DMK will meet here on October 9 to elect the party president and general secretary.
An announcement made by DMK general secretary Duraimurugan Thursday morning said the meeting of the general council members will be held at St George School in Aminjikarai at 9am on October 9 to elect the party president, general secretary and treasurer besides members of the audit committee of the party. Duraimurugan has requested the newly elected members to definitely participate in the meeting.
The top decision making body of the DMK is also expected to make some crucial changes in its hierarchy vis-a-vis increasing the strength of the number of deputy general secretaries following the exit of Subbulakshmi Jagadeeshan who quit the party recently. The DMK general council is expected to ‘ratify’ the appointment of a woman functionary, mostly its Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi as deputy general secretary, replacing Ms Jagadeeshan.
A resolution for appointing a woman deputy general secretary and increasing the number of deputy general secretaries by two numbers to seven is also expected to be adopted in the October 9 meeting. While State Information and Publicity Minister Vellakoil Saminathan, who hails from the Gounder community, is lobbying hard for an elevation, senior leader cum former union minister Jagaretchakan is also touted to be another strong contender for one of the deputy general secretary posts. The meeting would also approve the election of district secretaries and other district-level posts, which has been largely completed.
