Pegatron smartphone manufacturing plant inaugurated in TN
The MoU to set up the smartphone manufacturing plant was signed in February, last year, and the plant came into operation in a span of 18 months.
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday inaugurated Pegatron's smartphone manufacturing plant in Chengalpattu. The Taiwanese company has invested Rs 1,100 crore and the plant will provide employment to 14,000 persons in the State.
"At present, China manufactures the majority of smartphone models. We are working to change the scenario and to make Tamil Nadu the leader in smartphone manufacturing. We are taking steps to bring the entire supply chain to Tamil Nadu to make the leader in smartphone manufacturing,” said Stalin, after inaugurating the plant.
The MoU to set up the smartphone manufacturing plant was signed in February, last year, and the plant came into operation in a span of 18 months. Pegatron is the second largest smartphone supplier of Apple phones and the company which has established its plant in various parts of the globe and is one of the leaders in smartphone manufacturing.
"It is a pride for Tamil Nadu that one of the famous smartphone brands has commenced their operation," said Stalin.
He also said that among the 14,000 persons to be employed in the plant majority will be women and the policy of the company is to employ more women thus adding to strength to the policies of the ruling government working based on Dravidian model. The State government works with the intention to provide employment to youngsters and women.
"Pegatron plant becoming functional in 18 months shows that there is conducive atmosphere prevailing in the state for new investments. Allotment of land, permission within a stipulated period and providing incentives at the earliest are some of the steps due to which investments are pouring into the State. There was a recent report that Tamil Nadu is among the top three states in ease of doing business in India and inauguration of a new plant by Pegatron is a classic example for the report,” said Stalin.
Stalin further said that at present Tamil Nadu is contributing for 20 per cent of electronics manufacturing in the country and with Industry 4.0 of the State government the manufacturing map will be altered completely. "Very soon the State will release Tamil Nadu Electronics Hardware policy with the objective to increase manufacturing and export of electronics,” added Stalin.
