    One dies, 19 in hospital after consuming biryani in Tiruvarur

    After eating the food, around 20 persons developed vomiting and diarrhea and they were rushed to Tiruvarur Govt Medical College Hospital. While 12 of them were treated as outpatients and discharged, the condition of eight others were said to be critical.

    TIRUCHY: In yet another suspected case of food poisoning, a group of 20 persons, who consumed chicken biryani bought from a food outlet in a family function, complained of diarrhea and nausea. All of them were rushed to Tiruvarur Govt Medical College Hospital on Thursday night and one person died despite treatment on Friday.

    Sources said that the baby shower function for V Mariammal (26), wife of C Vignesh (29) of Tiruvasal in Tiruvarur, was held on Thursday and more than 50 relatives of the couple took part in the function. The guests were served with curd rice, tamarind rice, lemon rice and curry leaf rice along with chicken biryani that was sourced from a private food outlet in Pulivalam.

    After eating the food, around 20 persons developed vomiting and diarrhea and they were rushed to Tiruvarur Govt Medical College Hospital. While 12 of them were treated as outpatients and discharged, the condition of eight others were said to be critical.

    The hospitalised persons were identified as Selva Murugan (24) of Vengudi, Chandru (10), Elara (62), Selva Ganapathi (25), Balaji (22), the pregnant woman Mariammal, her father Rajamanickam (60) and a four-year-old child.

    While Mariammal and the child were shifted to a private hospital in Tiruvarur, Rajamanickam was admitted to Adiyakkamangalam GH and the other five were undergoing treatment at the Tiruvarur Govt Medical College Hospital.

    Meanwhile, on Friday, Selva Murugan succumbed despite treatment at the Tiruvarur Govt Medical College Hospital. Tiruvarur Taluk police have registered a case and are investigating.
