CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Transport Minister S S Sivasankar after holding talks with the Omnibus associations said that in addition to 2,100 buses being operated to Chennai from other parts of the State, the State Transport department has decided to run 1,213 special buses on Tuesday night and 1,846 buses to be operated to other major cities.

"Following the announcement of a strike from Omnibus owners, additional buses will be operated as per requirement. Officials have been deployed to monitor the operation of buses," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, the Southern States Omni Bus Association made an announcement that Omnibuses won't function today in the State from 6 pm onwards. The association demanded the release of 120 impounded Omnibuses on "false grounds of high ticket price".

Hours after the associations' announcement, the Tamil Nadu Omni Bus Owners Association (TOBOA) stated that 1,700 Omnibuses under their association will function as usual and that the public need not panic regarding the strike.
